Last month we had the pleasure of having here at West Palm Wines, Mario Bollag of Terralsole in Montalcino showing some of the best offerings from Tuscany I have tasted in quite a long time. I was proud to have him here and I have extended the special pricing to those of you who wanted to come but could not. Below are my tasting notes.

Mark Lasky / Italian Wine Specialist

Terralsole

Mario and Athena Bollag are the owners of Terralsole. She is a musician from San Francisco and he was born in Switzerland and trained as a lawyer. They both fell in love with Tuscany and each other and started Terralsole in 1997, planting two vineyards with a total of 15 acres. These two vineyards, Vigna Pian Bollolino and Vigna Fonte Lattaia are located in different terroirs of Montalcino so that the blending of the wine takes on a wonderful complexity. All grapes are hand picked and only the best clusters are used for this wine which spends a total of 24 months in barrel before bottling and another 6 months in bottle resting in their cool cellar before being released.

*2005 ROSSO di MONTALCINO, $24.95btl or $216.00cs
More like a Brunello, with lots of plum and chocolate character. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh finish.

*2005 “PASTICCIO” CAB. FRANC, MERLOT, SANGIOVESE, $72.25btl or $672.00cs
Perfumed and pretty, with floral and berry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with lots of fruit and chewy texture. Love the distinctive Italian Cabernet in this wine, rich and rustic.

*2005 “SOLISTA” SYRAH, $64.95btl or $594.00cs
Shows fresh and fruity blackberry and mineral aromas. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and tannins. Very Cote Rotie in style, plumy and loads of blue fruits!

*2005 “COLDORO” MERLOT, $52.50btl or $486.00cs
Very fresh and clean, with strawberry and floral character. Full-bodied, with good fruit, lush and silky with a long and satisfying finish. A real sexy Merlot!

*2003 BRUNELLO di MONTALCINO, $87.50btl or $810.00cs
Full-bodied, with lots of spicy, dried fruit character. Soft, clean, spicy and very approachable now. This you can drink and enjoy now and for several more years to come.

*2004 BRUNELLO di MONTALCINO, $93.50btl or $876.00cs
Aromas of tar, leather and ripe plum follow through to a full body, with soft tannins and a round, velvety textured finish. Very seductive but still very tightly wound. This is one for the cellar!
